Tim,
easier than that.
Weld / solder the new pointer in a convenient position.
Turn the engine over and align the existing TDC mark to the awkward pointer
underneath.
Then mark the pulley opposite your new pointer.

For the de-lux edition, cut a slight hacksaw nick in the pulley edge and
fill with white paint
