Glen,

John Sprinzel raced them, and produced hop up parts before the Sprite came
out...

If you want to see the car whose guts were used to create the original
bugeye
Sprite, check out this one at the Goodwood Revival last year.

This is the clip that inspired me to completely rebuild the A35 into a
vintage
racer. Should take the rest of the year, but looks like it will be a ton of
fun when its done.
Plans include a hot 948 w/ribcase/3.9 diff, oil cooler, sway bar, front
discs,
headers/glasspack, and of course, a rear mounted Jaguar deflector. (see the
video above)
It'll probably never beat a single car, but they'll still have to let me in
to
play with them. There also won't be much pressure to beat the world when
you're driving a funny looking little bugger like this. The pressure will
be
on everyone else not to get beaten by this English VW.

Glen
