my suspicions are you have 2 completly difrent problems and they both
require removal of the engine AND gear box!
first the shudder upon releasing the clutch is either high spots on the
flywheel requiring a resurfacing or some damage in the pressure plate
diaphram allowing unequal pressure upon release. that is usually the cause
of shuddering (or sometimes referred to as "juddering") upon releasing the
clutch.
the real serious problem you have will require disassembly of the gear box!
often the first gear slider or synchro hub assembly goes over center (past
either extreme of engaugement towards first or second gear) causing any or
all of the 3 detent balls to come partially out of their respective bores
just far enough that they will not return nor eject out . this effectivly
locks up the gear box in usually first gear.
the fix that the BMC gold seal gear boxes used was quite literally a washer
slipped onto the first / second gear shift rail to limit travel of the rail
in it's forward motion (engauging first gear) to keep this from happening
in known offenders! seriously! if you dismantle the gear box, put
evrything back where it belongs, and stick a washer onto that shift rail it
should not do this again!
but ooooh baby are you going to love the disassembly and reassembly
operation! not impossible, just frustrating when you find that this has
happened! get yerself a gear box gasket set and while you are at it at
the very least 3 new detent springs and 3 detent balls for the first gear
synchroniser assembly. that way if any springs or detent balls are
damaged you have the bare minium to reassemble. now munched up gears and
bearings are a WHOLE other story!

chuck.
been there...done that....and (*expletive*)(repete expletive frequently!)
did it on a freshly assembled car! *sigh* ;)
