What Brad said but stick with the 1098 radiator and just change the t/stat cover. Ron did a report on the thermo dynamics of both cross and down flow rads. They are the same but the down flow is a more durable unit. All you get by changing to a cross flow is an extra radiator hose to worry about. You can keep the spin on filter if you want and just eliminate the oil filter lamp or stick in a low oil pressure switch and use that wire so the light will light up if you oil pressure drops.
