When I bought my 62 Midget the DPO had mixed up the right and left backing
plates on the front drums so everything was installed backwards (yes it can
be done). Who knows how long he drove it that way. Maybe he drove in
reverse a lot? Was lucky he didn't get killed.

There's a leading shoe and a trailing shoe...
what happens if you reverse them??
