Hi Mark,

Good possibility it's simply "Over shifted" into 1st gear.  You can
frequently get it out by taking off the side cover and depressing the detent
balls as you rotate the first gear ring while prying it back with a
screwdriver.  BUT!!  It might happen again next time you put it in first
gear, or 4 months from now, whichever comes first!

Usually caused by a worn shifter fork.  Believe it or not, the 1st/2nd gear
one is still available new!!  Another fix is to place a spacer over that
shifter shaft.  Either of those fixes require removal of the gearbox from
the car.  It follows the engine coming out!
