That does sound familiar.  In my youth running in a rebuilt engine  involved 
a lot of 'short bursts'.  A 1000 miles is that I had mind but it  will 
probably need more than that before I put it in the dyno.  I usually  get 
comments 
like - in a few more thousands miles it will probably produce  another 5bhp+.
 
I was tempted to put a sign in the back saying 'running in, please pass'  but 
for 60mph and quick through the gears even changing at 3000rpm decided not  
to bother.
 
Did I forget to mention my W E S L A K E rocker cover in this post?

We used to put a small notice in the back  window that read "Running In".
