You can squirt a bit of carb cleaner on the throttle shaft bearings and see if
the idle changes which will help diagnose worn shaft bearings.

Also check for contamination within the idle jets and at the bottom of the fuel
bowl as minute stuff will get by the carb's. mesh filter and clog the idle
jet's tiny ports far more so than the larger ports of emulsion
tubes and main/air corrector jets.

Really minute stuff such as corrosion from the fuel tank/system will also get
by even the best of fuel filters but you'll see this
(brown 'sludge') at the bottom of the fuel bowl if this is the case, though
this minute stuff normally begins clogging the tiny progression holes as well
eventually leading of off-idle roughness on initial gently acceleration as well
as uneven or
less than stable idle.

It must be a really old and well used carb for that to happen. A good
weber specialist ought to be able to do this for you. There is a book about
Webers _www.veloce.co.uk_ (http://www.veloce.co.uk) that shows how to do
this for yourself.

My winter project is to correct this problem.

It looks like the ball bearings in the throttle shaft need to be replaced.
