per Dean Hedin...

  This will not help, but...
On at least two Datsun 510s (Mom's new '72 wagon, and my used '71 sedan) the
stock 4-speed trannies did this. Also my current '91 Toyota truck. Mom's was
so bad you could not shift into 2nd gear in the winter until the tranny warmed
up.
What we ended up doing was putting the transmission in neutral, taking the
foot off the clutch pedal and letting the engine idle for a minute or two to
get the fluid in the transmission warmed up enough to work.
The Datsun dealer ended up doing 'something' to the '72 wagon that helped the
problem a lot, but wouldn't tell us what.
It was only a serious problem in cold weather.
