I have tried using just peanut butter before, but the rats we had would just
lick it out of the little cup on the trap without springing it, or ignore
it. The best thing we found was lunch meat held on to the bait paddle with
a rubber band or tied on with dental floss. They tug at it to pull it off
and that sets springs the trap. Peanut butter with dog kibble embedded also
works good if they like the peanut butter.

I found that the back side of a shovel swung good and hard does a nice job
of dissipating a rat that is still alive in a trap.
