If the item is rare, then sniping on ebay is the only way to go.

But if it is something more common, I'll search elsewhere on the web
or even buy it now on ebay.

I've seen people bid twice over what they could have paid buy just going to
an online retailer.

Lately, Craigslist has been much more productive for me.  With car parts
it is usually a collection of stuff and the seller is willing to group stuff
together and make a deal on the spot.

Yup, the secret is to not give the other guy time to think about it.
That $430 switch would probably have been yours for under $200 if you
had not bid so soon. The seller really appreciates you.
