Starting your car in gear will also greatly shorten the life of your throwout
bearing, as will the common practice of resting your hand on the gearshift
lever as you are driving.

Michael,

This all depends on how you drive. Simple explanation...when stopped at a
light or in traffic, do you take the car out of gear and your foot off the
clutch? Or... do you keep the car in gear with the clutch depresses the
entire time? Using the latter technique, your throwout bearing will NOT
last long at all.

I have *always* used the first technique and have never had a throw out
bearing fail prematurely.

Cheers,

Curt
