              All;

              -Wasn't there a 6-rotor Wankel in a Mercedes?

Mercedes built some 3 and 4 rotor C111 sports cars in the 70's
that went 180-190 mph.

in the '30's or '40's
              that held some "massive" land-speed & closed course records?

In the 30's they used straight 8 formula 1 engines and one giant car that
never really ran (model 80) that had a ME-109 engine.

In the 70's they built an ultimate streamliner went 200 for 24 hours
using 14 mpg using a turbo diesel.
They then put a twin turbo 7 litre v8 in and got 268 mph.

              Why not just put in a ram-jet?

Need to go to 300-400 mph to start a ram-jet.
Pulse-jet would be better or old cheap turbbine.

 What about solid propellants? They have
              great power-to-weight characteristics. They'll keep tailgating to
a
              minimum in every automotive event you compete in after the swap.

Used in the "Blue Flame " to set the world speed record...Sidewinder rocket
however the rocket bulged into the cockpit so never run again.
