I'm game. (Slight limp). Firstly, I'd contact Professor Miller, renowned
expert. Failing that, I'd look to the two known design deficiencies in the
MkIIA design. This was overcome in the MkIIB design, but those can't get parts
for rebuild.
1) That stupid 5" to 7" "piston" in a coffee can is about the worst piston in a
cylinder design possible. The can can't be round, the surface is subject to
corrosion, which is probably not addressed by a proper finish during rebuild.
2) The "piston seal rope" in the rebuild kit is known to be the wrong length,
and must be hand trimmed, by an expert, to the correct (but secret) length.
3) The rod to 7" diameter tin can "piston" is not square.
4) The "piston" is loose on the rod and cocks.
5) There is always insufficient Girling secret red stuff used.
6) It wasn't assembled true.
7) The seal between the rod and the hydraulics is weak, poorly designed, fails a
lot, and causes frequent rebuilds due to hydraulic fluid consumption.
Well, that's enough for starters. I'll leave the other 23 flaws to experts like
Paul R.
