Hello all,

I want to be sure that everyone understands that my postings reflect only
my opinion, and not that of anyone else mentioned by name. Specifically,
Steve Laifman has asked my to assure you all that he has not said that TT's
hoods were no good, or were worse than other LAT 79 repros.
If I led anyone to believe that Steve meant that in his postings to me
(that I did not mean to release onto the net), I apologize.

MY POSITION is this: These hoods may be as good as the rest of the hoods
that have been offered in the past, but in 1999, a fiberglass hood can be
made to fit. One suggestion has been to take a mould off a good steel
hood, then put on the scoops. Another has been to ship the hoods without
the hinge holes drilled and with a kit for installing thread kits and
studs, as well as some instructions for their use. One thing that would
help would be to make the hoods LARGER; perhaps to the extent that it would
have to be sanded down to get the correct gap. Some attention to detail
could work wonders.

I want to state that I don't beleve that TT is putting out lousy parts to
rip people off, but I DO think that whoever is making these hoods needs to
clean up the mould, and do a little rethinking on how the hoods are made.

It appears that about 10-12 hours is required to make the hood fit. This
includes relocating the hinges, filling, redrilling, and helicoiling the
hinge mount plates so that the hood is about 1/2" further up in the
opening, grinding down and adding material to the hood so that it is 1/8"
to 3/16" wider on each side (1/4" to 3/8" wider, total), and adding around
1/2" to the rear of the hood. These mods make a hood that fits after, of
course, filling the low areas and filing down the high areas.

I was able to mod the hood in only 2 1/2 days, but only because I build
experimental a/c as another hobby, and have the equipment for the required
work on the fiberglass. Another might have to go to a commercial body shop
and pay.

Again, I want to stress that the above is MY experience. The rest of you
who have written me with tips and shared commiseration, I thank.

Regards,

Ray

Steve,

Will the above work for you? Suggestions on any changes you wish will be
included.

Thanks for all the help; I will send tomorrow what I have done to make the
"hood" fit properly. You'll love it.

Ray
