Jim, why not have the tank set upright, in the general area where the
Alpine wheel goes. the idea would be to have the rear of the car act as
a crumple zone, with the tank as far inboard as possible.

You would still be able to get luggage into the trunk, and of course you
can customize the trunk area to suit your needs, since it will not be
stock anyway.

You might be able to get a standard rectangular tank that then fits. 
Unless you put a metal barrier between the trunk area and the passenger
compartment, you will get a spill into the passenger compartment if it
is hit in the rear severely.  Of course, if this happens, the gas tank
may not be the only problem you have to worry about.
