Bob,
        Pull the oil pan and measure the bore.  If 4" bore then it is not a 260.
If it has 6 bolt transmission mounting, it is not a 260.  So if it has a 4" bore
and a 6 bolt transmission housing it may be either a 289 or 302.  The very early
289 had 5 bolt transmission mounting like a 260. The later 302 had  ~50 oz 
unbalance. The weight cast into the flywheel is larger than the ~28 oz used
on the
221,260 or 289.
        NASCAR uses a tool that determines displacement simply by screwing the
tool in a spark plug hole and cranking the motor over. Do not know exactly how 
it works.
