Randy,
   One of the reasons the registry exist is to preserve the integrity of the
surviving species. It could be that Norm giving out the information you
requested could possibly put that matter in jeopardy.  Additionally it might
be rather frustating for him when he can only aquire partial information to
add to his records.
   In my case I initially inquired to him since my car was registered at the
DMV under the JAL #. I only told him where/how I had recently purchased it
(Jan. 2000) and shortly he was aware of both the JAL # and the B947----
number of my car even though I had never told him. If in my case there had
been an issue of fraud it would have been best that certain information was
not "public." I wil grant you he never asked for the trans number, but later
I did provide it and the rearend number to him (the engine was known not to
be original). Though I can not speak for Norm, maybe this will turn out to
