Found another interesting bit of info (in my own work shop). My son has an
original Merc. Marauder (1964) with a dead 390 in it. We have a new pro street
460 with blower waiting to go in. Thought I'd just junk the 390, but was bored
and decided to tear it down. When I got to the crank it looked different from
any 390 crank I've seen. It is forged and crossed drilled and has a swatch of
orange paint on the back most counter weight. A little research indicates this
is a 406,410 or 428 Hi Po crank with a 3.78 inch stroke....they same as the
390. I've talked to several Ford builders in the area and they say that if Ford
ran out of a particular part they would if available put something other than
what was stock in as to meet production schedules.

Turned out the crank will clean up at 20 thousands and has some value (like
more than we paid for the Merc. in the first place). The engine appeared to be
unopened and I believe that this is the original crank. Bore is approximately
4 inches. The other oddity, the 390 has a 2 barrel and the car itself is a
four door. Ran numbers and it is a true Marauder, but find no mention in any
references.

Seems there is not as much uniformity in the auto manufacturing business as I
thought.
