Rich,

I am a loss to understand your quandary. Edelbrock still makes a line
of Weber modified Carter carbs under their name. The "Thunder Series"
still includes a 650 CFM square bore model, as well as humongous "Q-Jet"
"Rochester" replacements for your 454 CID Ford, which any ham hand can
sleeve down while removing your thermostat. :-)

Sure, linkage could be a problem, but any Tinker Toy box has enough
stuff to make one, or salvage it from a core. Try the thermostat guy,
but make sure he removes the carb before he takes out the torch.

(Have you considered MPFI (multi port fuel injection), or even single
body FI, since we are going so far afield from stock?
