Kevin,

Your noise sounds like excessive lifter clearance. The following could cause
it:

1. During that 8000 RPM "blowout" you went through, the lifter may have
pumped up causing a valve to kiss the piston. This could have bent a valve or
hopefully just bent a push rod.

2. A lifter internal valve just got plugged from some debris and won't hold
oil.

You can start looking for the problem by doing a lash check. One rocker
should show excessive clearance, indicating where your problem is. You can also
check the lifters with a thin feeler gage, about a .005, while the engine is
running at idle. If you can easily get the gage in then that's where you have a
problem. Good lifters shouldn't let the gage in if you have good oil pressure.

If your problem is a bent push rod, than that's easy to replace. If it's not
then the problem gets harder to repair.

Next, do a compression check. If that cylinder is way low in compression then
you probably have a bent valve, requiring a head removal. If the compression
is good then you probably have a bad lifter, requiring that the intake
manifold be removed. If it is a lifter, you might just drive it some to see if
it
cures it's self.

                      John L
