  If you ran through a relay directly from the battery to the coil with
appropriate size wire you would get your 12 volts. The relay could be
activated from the ignition switch and as such the car would function like
normal, but not be dependent upon the roote (pun intended) that the voltage
would takes with the stock wiring.
