Joey,

That IS the gear that terminates the cable.  It has 14 teeth (try 
counting them, it is confusing) and is not available anywhere, Don't 
throw it out.  The cable just plugs into a square hole, and it should 
come out so the gear can be put on the new cable.  Ask the speedo shop 
that made the cable to help you, so you don't break the plastic gear.
