on the subject of 'carbon black' in the link copied here...
"Tire manufacturers add two primary sacrificial protectants to the rubber. To 
protect against UV, they add carbon black." 
Last week Klick and Klack on their NPR show stated that carbon black also 
reduced/eliminated static electricity from the vehicle.  A caller had stated 
they were excessively zapped by their vehicle.  Apparently some tire 
manufactureres have reduced the carbon black content and this exacerbates the 
static problem (carbon is a good conductor) of bleeding off the charge to the 
ground.  I used to think it was just a function of the seat cover (sheep wool 
is very bad here) and the low humidity.  I'd like to see the sharp pencil 
accountants lined up and experience a pleasant 40,000 volt discharge for the 
few pennies they shaved by reducing carbon black content.
