For the Race car I usually dump it every other track weekend. As the engine
gets closer to blowing up, less often so I don't have to spend 100 bucks on
that last oil change ;-)

I have a 03' PSD 7.4 in the excursion and I had the
3 year service that changed the oil every 5k. Which is the truck interval
which I always thought as excessive for my useage, but now that I do it my
self, I have been trying to target about 7500 miles. I used about 12Qt's of
Delvac synthetic. It is my daily driver but if it was a tow truck or work
vehicle I would stick with the 5k. The diesel oil usually comes in the nice
gallon jugs too. Just wear gloves as the old oil has that carbon black going
that likes to stain your skin :-)

For a ton of good info on the Ford SD's go
to the www.dieselstop.com forums, loads of great info on all the diesel
trucks.

Ok I have a question for
those that have used Synthetic for Diesels in a
Diesel

What kind of intervals
were you changing the oil? I am going to purchase a
new 08 Super Duty with
Twin Turbos on it. Now these new trucks don't
measure the oil in quarts it's
in Gallons these days. It takes like 15 qts
or something stupid like that
each oil change. I thought I might run
synthetic in my new truck - comments?
Also poke around on the web you will find a few sites that
have analyzed most
racing and other oils for their additive package (After
you get through all
the AMS oil ads and such). One thing that I have found
was that Diesel oil has
a good deal of additives like the racing oils and is
not much more then
regular oils. Also some of the motorcycle oils (Sometimes
V Twin specific)
have the high additive contents as well. I have been
running Mobil1 Synthetic
Diesel (Delvac) on and off with no issues (It's now
rebranded asTurbo Diesel
Truck Synthetic Motor Oil 5W-40 and easily had vs.
the Delvac branding). Also
running racing Royal Purple which has a high
additive (read zinc and others).
**Caution opinion ahead**, you don't want
to run the synthetics in older
non-roller lifer cars. Many people do, but
seems some folks have had issues
mainly related to the oils beeing too
slippery to spin the lifter and that may
cause other wear issues.
