During the mid-70's Ford made an aluminum-case version of the toploader
dubbed the Single-Rail Overdrive. This was a version where the shift
linkage for the 3/4 shift ring was reversed, and then they reworked the
countershaft (and the gear corresponding to 3rd) to make the 3rd gear
position an overdrive ratio. This was definitely a 'wide' ratio gearbox
by anyone's definition, and gives a significant hole between 2nd and
"3rd" (now the 1:1 direct drive). I think John Crawley ran one of these
in his Tiger for a while.
