I guess "poor" would be a relative term.  I've had boiling  water in a
coffee 
mug and couldn't hold on to the mug because it was so hot (not  the 
handle-the mug directly). I agree that it probably doesn't conduct heat the
way that 
metal would, but it still definitely conducts. 
I'd be curious to know in percentages how it compares in  conductivity with 
steel.
