Many of us are staying on point and Yes, this is an interesting
problem.
Here is where our collective thoughts gravitate:

1 The elastomer part of the harmonic balancer could be slipping.
This seem to be a long shot for this problem.
Check to make sure.

2 The cam timing gear could be nylon covered and it is now cracked and
breaking off the alum cam gear.
I just found a reference that states this type of gear was used
through the mid-80's.
This could be the big suspect.

3 The distributor gear is shifting due to a sheared pin or something
in the mechanical advance is hanging up, broken or shifting.

Never assume something is OK without inspecting and checking to make sure it
is working correctly.

This problem seems to be a mechanical one. The real problem; what is the
cause. Troubleshooting by long distance is as bad or worse than being hands
on.

forgot to remove the trailer.... bummer..

Gary, also tell them about the dizzy itself, especially the points
breaker cam setup. And ask if anyone has a stock dizzy that you can
borrow for trouble shooting if in your neck of the woods. And the part
number and maker of the dizzy.

And you other guys, stay on point, lol... this is an interesting problem.
