Paula,
You may be fixing the wrong end of the problem. The starter
has a 'bendix' gear on the end of the armature shaft.This
gear moves on the starter shaft to engage the ring gear when
the starter is engaged. The shaft it slides or moves on
will, in time, get gooed up with crap. (You should pardon
the expression) Anyway, if it doesn't slide far enough to
totally engage the ring gear the awful sound you hear is the
result. Remove the starter and look at the bendix, if it's
all chewed up - replace it. If not keep and, in either case,
clean it's shaft with something like brake cleaner or PB
Blaster or similar to remove the junk and allow it to move
freely.
