Kai---There are at least a couple of ways to adjust timing "on the fly".
Unfortunately, I don't think it can be done with anything but an
electronic ignition. One way is with one of the MSD ignitions that can
incorporate a 'knock sensor'. It is adjustable in providing a given
amount of retard when it hears knock. A second version is also an MSD
unit that allows a cockpit adjustable timing advance/retard to your own
liking. Easy to install, with good instructions and illustrations. It
WILL mean purchasing the MSD6-A main unit, as well as the Timer. About
$200, but cheap if it will save you a few pistons!
Go to the MSD website for more on this.

Carter also makes what they call a "knock sensor". All of these work by
hearing a special knock unique to detonation, and of course can only
work with an ignition that has a 'black box' for control.

If you run boost in the area of 8lb. or less and set initial timing at
40 BTDC, have a low compressioned head (under 7.75:1) and use fuel
with an octane rating of 92 or better, you may not even have a
detonation problem to deal with.
