Walt---Since you have a strobe light you should use it. Better to check
ignition advancement as well as at idle. If you want to leave your two
vacuum lines connected during normal operatioms, it might be easier to
time the engine with both of these lines disconnected and plugged (with
a nail, or something) and set the idle timing to 12 BTDC. If the engine
pings, you can always retard this a little.

You didn't say how your timing is set now. Normally the timing has to be
really off to cause problems other than poor milege, poor acceleration,
and such.  If you timing is close to the above, and advances to 28
deg.+/- 3 at around 3,000 rpm, your problem with stumblng is likely
elsewhere.
