William---It may be necessary for you to check the sealing washer at the
inlet valve that you suspect could be letting fuel enter, even when the
float itself is holding it "shut". One way you can do this is to remove
the carb and apply two lb. of air pressure to the fuel inlet, while
holding the carb upside down in a container of water. No bubbles should
get past the Grose Jet ball valve, with modest pressure holding it
closed.

I wouldn't deviate from the normal float height. If fuel is getting past
the shut off, this is what must be corrected. Did you not get other
gaskets when you received the Grose kit?
