on my 1971, the cable clips to the firewall behind the battery.
i rerouted mine slightly so that it goes through the wiper motor mounting 
bracket, which reduces the bends and kicks. I also, put a little grease on the 
inside metal part of the cable, under the handle where it goes into the casing. 
my cable works perfectly.
