Sean, the speedo is fairly straightforward to dismantle but you do need
to take care.

Once you have undone the speedo drive and removed the two nuts that
secure the unit to the dash you can pull the unit forward. Then remove
the two illumination and beam/indicator lamps and the wires attached to
the voltage regulator and detach the trip reset from below the dash. You
can then remove the speedo from the dash.

It will come with the trip meter reset cable attached. Do not attempt to
pull this out of the speedo case or you will break it beyond repair.

The bezel and the glass are more or less bonded together and they will
come off together by rotating the bezel until the tabs on the back line
up with the slots in the case. Don't try and remove the bezel by bending
the tabs, that is counter productive. You may need to ease the tabs up a
little to allow the bezel to rotate.

With the bezel and glass removed you will be looking at the dial and the
white speed indicator needle. This is very fragile so leave it alone.

The innards of the speedo can be removed by removing the screws on the
back. With the screws out the innards can be pulled forwards and that
will also release it from the trip reset cable which is locked into the
case with its plastic tab and is the reason you cannot and should not
attempt to pull it off from the rear.

The beam/indicator jewel lenses have a short extension and are a press
fit into the face of the speedo but they have been known to break off
where they are held by the face. I don't see a problem in superglueing
these back in if you don't slop too much glue around and contaminate the
speedo face.

One of the jewel extensions (I forget which) anchors the wire that forms
the speedo needle rest position so you may have to improvise a little if
that is the one that is detached and is in fact broken. If the short
extension has broken off that could well be the cause of your problem
and superglueing that back together may be the best remedy.

Reassembly is just the reverse, take the opportunity to clean the glass
inside and out. You may need a new gasket for the speedo to dash
interface. These self destruct over time. The popular suppliers sell
replacements that have a round cross section, there was a guy on ebay
selling better fitting square section gaskets a while back, not sure if
he is still around.

The paper gasket between the bezel and the case usually holds up quite
well.

Stan
