Eric,
I swapped the stock alt on my SV for a Datsun alt off a early 80s
truck. This bolts up very nice to a SV bottom bracket. I messed around
with several different top brackets but ended up going to a junk yard
and getting a top bracket from a Datsun truck, flipped it so the curve
goes up and it also bolts right up. With this set up you will not need
the regulator. There is a good write up on this conversion at
www.sunbeamalpine.org click on back issues and it is the first one. I
do suggest that you do some reinforcing welds on the bottom SV bracket
they seem to break. I can send you some pictures and I may have the part
number for the alternator I used which cost around $40 and puts out
around 45 amps if I remember right. This is not a one wire alternator
but the ease of the install and the cost of the alt make it a nice swap.
