There are a number of took kits
available in folding plastic cases. The
Craftsman set I carry has a variety of
metric and SAE wrenches and a fairly
completes set of sockets (both 1/4 and
3'/8" drive with extensions), Phillips
and flathead screwdrivers, and pliers.
It is compact and fits nicely into the
side well of the trunk. I often use it
when I am working on the car. For
longer trips I carry upper and lower
radiator hoses, and fuel filters. I can
think of a few other items I would like
to carry, but don't have, like fuel and
water pumps. I will look at some of the
other suggestions and probably add to my
kit for longer trips. I also carry a
road emergency service card.

I'm trying to tidy up my trunk and keep
just the absolutes. So my two
questions are

What is the absolute minimum tools
needed in a traveling tool kit for a
roadster and other emergency essentials

and

what are any other additional tools one
would have plus the minimum.

I'll start off with the basics

flathead screwdriver
philips screwdriver
fuses
jack
lugnut wrench
electrical tape
duct tape
water bottle
specific wrenches? which ones?
extra quart of oil (needed?)
antifreeze (needed?)
