It should take 12 volts at the F terminal to excite the alternator.  If you 
don't hook up any excite wires then the alternator may self excite when it 
reaches 3500 rpms or something like that.  It is very possible that is why you 
weren't charging at idle.  Try putting 12 volts to the F terminal.  The other 
terminal is a ground for the battery idiot light if I remember correctly.

I could be completely wrong.
