Way back in 1975, I took out my old 69 2000 and raced an Avanti out on a Garden
State parkway tool booth.

I had SU carbs, a B cam, header exhaust and free flow exhaust I built myself,
and I had cleaned up the intake manifold. I had spent a lot of time getting
everything "right" and was running Sunoco 260, 101 octane.

I beat the Avanti, and we both topped out at the same speed. My speedo,
corrected to the somewhat oversized tire OD I had, figured to 135 mph. With the
error in the speedo, I guess it was more like 125. But I was ahead by 4 car
lengths. It did handle like a leaf in the wind at that point. <SEG>

I sold the car about 2 years later, in fear of my license, I couldn't control
the need for speed. I was clocked on radar after beating an Alpha doing 115,
and I was decellerating at the time. The cop was a car nut and let me off,
believe it or not....

Unfortunately, the buyer's garage burned down a year later.... So long
roadster.

  Jim

I took my first 2L, a 68 purchased new, and other than tires 100% stock, out
to see how fast it would go shortly after I purchased the car. At about 121
mph it started doing the St. Vitas dance on I84 because of the air flow
under the car. Now I know why they make air dams, and not to try that again
without one.
