Remember, it takes two to bid up a car. At least two, so it isn't just a
single nut. Auctions can go either way, and they are very emotional. I was
at the RM auction, though I didn't see that particular car, and most of
the fairly high-dollar cars were going cheap or not meeting reserve. Some
of the cheaper cars went for either too much or too little. The only car I
was really interested in was a very rough cooper Monaco, that went fairly
high.
One final note--though it's not quite so likely to happen at a glitz
auction like RM in Monterey, and very unlikely for what you would
typically think of as a relatively low-buck car, some of these cars get
bid up to establish a price. Paying the auctioneers commission for a $10K
car that gets bid to $24K and later selling it as a bargain for $18K is
probably not worth the effort and expense. But bidding a $100K car to 200K
and selling it for $180K is a common ploy.

Did he know something we don't? (perhaps there's a
missing $200 million buck lottery ticket tucked in
the door pocket or the queen mom used it to mow down
paparazzi).
Is he trying to corner the market on surrey top
Triumphs?
Was he willing to spend ANY amount of money to
hang with "salt-of-the-earth" Triumph folk, not
knowing a pulse is all that's required (for most of
us?

While "a rising tide lifts all boats", I'm pretty
sure I won't be getting $12K any time soon should I
try to sell my "bitsa" TR4...
