Same problem I had when I forst got m BJ8. I put a towel over the dash 
and anotherone on the floor and sprayed WD40 into the openings around 
the lock ring. I did this three or four times and let it soak overnight. 
I don't know if it helped for sure, but I did turn the ring with channel 
locks the next night. I put  rag around the ring to protect it fromt eh 
channel locks. I think the rubber strap wrench would be a most excellent 
tool for this.
