Hey Michael.
Yes - it's a standard right hand thread. So right side down loosens the
sucker. Use a strap wrench to avoid gouging the soft finish.

The collar on my wife's 3000 is frozen--has been since I got the car. Since
the wheel is adjusted all the way in I have never attempted to loosen the
locknut with channel-locks or a pipe wrench as I was afraid to crack the
bakelight but I am very interested to see what is recommended. BTW is this
a "righty-tighty" deal when facing the wheel or is it the other way around?
