Your idea of using a pice of wood to spread the load is a good one, as long
as you do this and make sure each corner is stable (maybe 2 blocks together
with a thick plywood board over each and no part of the base of the stands
near the edges) I would think that would be safe.

Obviously there are two bad things that could happen, one is that the car
slips off a stand or a stand slips off a block, the other is that the block
itself disintigrates or collapses under the weight. If these things happen
and you or someone is under the car the results are exponentially worse.

But maybe I am not the guy to go to for this kind of advice, I sort of have
a fuzzy memory of working under a Sprite many many years ago that was
sitting on a stack of bricks and was rocking as I tried to loosen a stuck
bolt.

If the tires are on the car you can put concrete blocks or ramps something
under them as a back up. I have drive up ramps and of course they don't
work as intended on the low slung healey, but once jacked up to a sufficient
height you can still stick them under the tires.
