Lynn,

It was definetely not Tartan Red. Tartan Red is an early MGB colour, and 
quite a bit deeper shade.

If it was red, your '59 BN4 would have been Colorado Red, which should be 
able to be found and matched by eye from old colour chip books of the time. 
The original BMC paint code was RD 02.
