Richard,

I went about 2/3 of the way through from the bottom.  Wanted to maintain 
integrety of the top surface.  There were 16 holes which sounds like a lot and 
they were within maybe 1 inch of each other.  But this foam was quite firm to 
start with.  You can drill some, sit on the cushion and drill more if you feel 
it is still too firm.  That is what I did.
