Yes, I did this for years, and replaced the marks every time I reinstalled a
knockoff.  I quit doing it because the knockoff ALWAYS tightened itself more
while driving, no matter how tight I got it to start with.  I have also
ALWAYS lubricated the wheel/hub splines and the threads of the hub and
knockoff at least once a year.  In 26 years and over 100K miles, I have
never had a knockoff loosen itself.

Has anyone ever put a mark on the knock off and wheel when they have 
tightened down "good and hard" to see if the self tightening still occurs?
