Yes, I have found the front gearbox seal installed the correct way, the
incorrect way, and on one occassion, not there at all. The same with
the rear felt compression seal, except there it doesn't matter which way
round it goes, but it does matter if it isn't there at all. I have also
seen attempts at installing a 'modern' lip type seal at the rear of the
box, but that didn't work too well, because of the Archimedes type screw
oil leak control device also to be found on the propeller shaft flange
coupling. Here the felt seal which is compressed around the flange's
boss seems to work quite well, allowing only the occassional drip to
emerge. I am a great believer in substituting the asbestos rope type
seal on the front end of the crankshaft with the Moss type lip seal.
This works well.
I am now wondering what may be going on in Mr. Wilt's brain, having seen
all these messages flying around in cyberspace. He is still left with
the same problem, namely what on earth is he going to do now, having
spent all that dough, and he still has substantial justified
complaints. Perhaps he'll let us know. Lawyers perhaps??
