I don't really know the answer to this but if it is of any interest I used
to help one of the MG specialists in the UK at the race track (OK, so I got
free tickets and just went along and hindered them!). The majority of racers
ran roadsters with a hard top, the rest ran GTs.

I did ask about this and was told that the roadsters needed the hard top for
the aerodynamics, it gained them an extra 5-10mph or so against running with
no top or a soft top (no top was allowed as far as I can remember). The
aerodynamic difference between a roadster with a hardtop and a GT wasn't
considered significant enough to worry about, the only difference being the
roadsters were slightly lighter and so had that small edge. That weight (and
maybe aerodynamics?) difference did show as the roadsters almost always
placed higher in the field than the GTs.

Going back to the garage now, Stef told me yesterday she wanted to drive our
B to St. Paul in July! A complete rebuild in three months????????????? What
do you think? Taking into account the fact I can spend at least 4 days a
week working on the car and she will also help!

Cheers
