There was a PBS show about some rare WWII bomber that was
abandoned up in the artic circle
somewhere. It was in amazingly good shape due to the cold.
<<<snip>>>
It was a P-38 lighting fighter. The flight of six (?) plus
two B-17 were being ferried to England early in the war.
They got lost in a blizzard and coulnd't find the refueling
base in Greenland. So the landed on the snow pack. The
first plane in went in with gear down which wasn't the thing
to do. The rest slid in gear up. The crews go out on foot
about 10 days later after getting food and directions. The
plane ended up about 100 feet below the ice pack over the 50
years. They had to melt a 36" hole down to it, dissassemble
the plane and bring it up in pieces. It took several years
to rebuild the plane and it just recently conducted it's
maiden flight.
