Well according to the Lucas wiring code, red is for side and tail lights
(middle position), blue is for headlights (full on position). Brown is
unfused 12V, and purple is fused 12V. Therefore, if on a '69 the
headlights were fused (unlikely) use the purple wire on the common
terminal, otherwise use the brown wire.

It's unclear to me why there would be a fourth wire, but the lights
should be functional without it. Just tape up the extra wire and forget
it.

Cheers,
Lew Palmer

Don't have any MGC diagrams but I can't imagine what the purple would be
for
there, sounds like a PO addition. Does it come out of the loom or is it
loose? If loose where does it go? Purple on the MGB is fused, always
hot,
for things like the horn and interior lights. Does the old switch have
four
terminals? Or was the purple attached to the same terminal as one of
the
others? Is the purple connected to anything i.e. what happens if you
connect a fused 12v supply to it? Or does it show 12v when something
else
is switched on? If the front running lights didn't come on with the
other
three wires connected then maybe that wire (red on an MGB) is damaged up
front somewhere and the PO ran in a purple to bypass it. In which case
it
should go with the red on the switch.

> I changed the head light switch on my 69 MGC Roadster today and
discovered
the original had 4 wires attached to it, 1- red 2- blue 3- brown 4-
purple.
The problem is the replacement switch only has 3 posts. The wiring
diagram I
have from the C manual only shows 3 wires and purple is not one of them.
What is the purple for? I tried the new switch and everything worked
front
and back head lights tail lights, liscence plate lights only exception
was
the front running lights(turn signals did work). What is the purple wire
for
and can I double it up on another post, and if so which post?
