Went this morning to try and transfer the title on the '49 that I have
in a million pieces waiting on the body guys. Thought I would get a
jump on title and tags so when it is ready I can drive it legally. Was
told by the local tax assessor that I have to have an inspection
certificate and insurance to get title transferred and tags. Problem
is, to get insurance, I have to have title (don't I?) and a mechanics
letter that the truck is road worthy, and to get inspection I have to
have insurance. So what comes first, the chicken or the egg? Based on
my conversation this morning it looks like the steps are as follows:
1. Go find an inspector that I can convince of my situation and get an
inspection and mechanics letter.
2. Convince my insurance carrier that I am road worthy and conveniently
omit that I "technically" don't have title to the truck.
3. Take the title, inspection and insurance to the tax assessor
immediatly and close the deal.
Has anybody done this? Am I making this harder than it is? Do I have to
trailer my truck to the mechanic or should I just borrow a plate from my
suburban? Help please with any suggestions.
